MR. J. B. CALLAN DEAD
PIONEER DUNEDIN LAWYER Press Association. m DUNEDIN, Friday. The death of Mr. John Bartholomew Callan, sen.r., to-day, has removed one of the older generation of legal practitioners in Dunedin. Mr. Callan was born in Dublin in 1844, and at the age of 15 went to Victoria. In 1862 hs entered the Civil Service, and studiod at Melbourne University for the law. and was admitted to the Victorian Bar in 1876. He then cam© to Dunedin, where he practised his profession until he retired in 1906. A year later he was appointed to the Legislative Council, where he sat until-* 1914. For some years he was a member of the Dunedin Licensing Committee. He had also been president of the Otago District Law Society. He is survived by a son, Mr. J. B. Ca.llan, and a daughter.
