EXCITEMENT FOR JAPS.
GOVERNMENT’S BARE MAJORITY LIVELY SESSION LIKELY (United P. A.—By Telegraph — Copyright.) (Australian P.A.-—United Service) Reed. 9.30 a.m. TOKYO, Friday. Mr. Hajime Motoda was elected Speaker of Parliament by a vote of 230 to 228. This indicates that the session be exciting, since the Government has only t£ie barest possible majority. The Emperor Hirohito delivers his speech from the Throne cr> Monday. At the opening of Parliament the state of the two chief parties was: Seiyukai (Conservative Ministerialists), 221; Minseito (Liberal Opposition), 217. Mr. Hajime Motoda was elected Speaker. The Government claims a majority of eight, including the division of the small parties. The election of a Seiyukaiite Speaker will be a considerable advantage. The Seiyukai took office in April, 1927, under Baron Tanaka as Prime Minister as a minority Government following the overthrow of the Minseito Government in the banking crisis. Except in a special Session in May to deal with that crisis, and a one-day Session on December 26, the Seiyukai did not meet the Diet'until January 21. It was then at once apparent that the Government did not command a majority, and it dissolved the House.
