A SECRET SOLVED
STABLE TO FOLLOW SYDNEY FOLK KNOW NOW Sydney punters reckon they have discovered a new betting secret tbat is assured of financial results. The gist of it is that whenever Mr. John "Baron’’ has an unknown youngster in a race, then is the time to back it for big money. So far this season it would have been attended by the making of a fortune. Elizabeth’s March, having her first run, won the Warwick Farm Kirkham Stakes before Christmas. On Easter Monday, in the Easter Stakes, Bob’s March went further by running away with the stake at his initial public appearance. Bob’s March showed himself a particularly good colt, who may go a long way, for he was opposed to a fair field of seasoned gallopers Rare Possibilities But. "Mr. Baron” had it on the owners of other youngsters inasmuch as liis trainer, I. H. Andrews, trains at Warwick Farm, far from the prying and discerning eye? touts, and consequently could have in his stable a second Gloaming without the city racegoers knowing a word about it. Nothing had ever leaked out about Elizabeth’s March prior to her win, and nothing was known of Bob’s March, but the fact that both started at extreme odds indicated that their showings were a surprise even to their connections. A few bets were laid against Bob’s March, but they were small, and probably taken more for the sake of the odds than with any idea that the colt would be the good thing he subsequently proved. Moved Up Smartly Bob’s March did not commence smartly, but moved into a position behind the first four or five after covering a furlong. At the half-mile post a bunch comprising Lowfield, Black Dina. Panola, and Martimah, were disputing the lead, and the fact that Bob’s March was travelling smoothly behind them merely attracted attention to his future chances. No one considered that this untried colt would come along to beat such proved youngsters as those in front; but Bob’s March moved up third into the straight, and when he headed Panola (Vertigern’s sister) a furlong from home, the bookmakers gave the sole joyous shouts on Randwick racecourse. Under the whip from the time he hit the front, Bob’s March. settled down to his task as though he had had months of racing experience. Panola fought valiantly, but the outsider, galloping finely, went away to win by two lengths. A New Sire The win was a wonderful advertisement for the imported stallion March Along. Not many of his stock have been tried by “Mr. Baron,”’ but already he has sired winners in MacPherson’s March, Lady Dudley March, Elizabeth’s March, and Bob’s March. Panola was the only well-backed horse to show up at all decently. Lowfield, the medium of remarkable fluctuations in the ring, was a great disappointment, but he will probably do better before the meeting closes. Among the leaders all the way, he ran very wide at the turn, and by the time he was straightened up was out of the race. Golden Music dwelt slightly at the j jump, and never really got into the picture. The going, too, which was holding, seemed to cramp his action, and he was never going comfortably. Balmerino, with a good Melbourne reputation, was another adversely affected by the track, and finished second last, just in front of Happy New, who was tailed off over the greater part of the journey.
