JEWELS WORTH MILLION

AMAZING MANNEQUIN PARADE POLICE GUARD OUTSIDE (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian Press Association) LONDON, Thursday. A most amazing mannequin parade was held in the ballroom of a West End hotel, to demonstrate that a lovely gown should be designed to be worn with magnificent jewellery. For this purpose a famous Paris dressmaking firm combined with a jewellers’ association. Outside the hotel six uniformed policemen and 20 special detectives from Scotland Yard mingled with the fashionable crowd. The value of the precious stones worn was estimated at £1,000,000. These included very famous jewels, such as a pearl necklace valued at £IOO,OOO, an emerald necklace valued at £45,000, a diamond bracelet valued at £16,000. The largest known opal was worn as a buckle. All the jewels were carefully weighed, measured and photographed beforehand as a precaution. There was a thrill when a mannequin appeared wearing the necklace, worth £50,000, which was stolen in France while in the course of post, and recovered on Monday last. The scene will he commemorated on canvas.
