Life’s Collection of Antiques to be Sold
WORTH £16,000 VARIETY OF TREASURES After spending a lifetime in collecting choice antiques and works of art in England and the Continent, a connoisseur is about to dispose of his property. fpHE collection is valued at between L £15,000 and £16,000, and the variety and worth of the ipeces offers a groat opportunity not only to artists, but to all householders who admire in their homes the appearance of period furniture, silver, old china and bronzes. Hepplewhite, Chippendale, Sheraton, the most famous English furniture makers are represented in the collection. ’ There arc exquisite French Buhl cabinets and great sideboards of mahogany. An Italian rosewood chair, inlaid with mother-of-pearl, might almost be a throne. Chairs, cupboards, china cabinets. tables, fire-screens, wardrobes, chests, book cases and a fine old satinwood bed, all bear the unmistakable’ stamp of mellow age, and of perfect craftsmanship. CLOCKS A FEATURE Clocks form a feature of the display There are five grandfather clocks, one old English lacquer piece, a French gilt one, and ten fine Ormulu. In silver there are claret jugs, cups, cruets and spoons, and in bronze and brass vases, statuettes, urns, fenders, coal scuttles, candlesticks and candelabra. Six pieces of old china are outstanding. They are a bevel glass mirror in Dresden china frame, a beautiful mirror in a Delf frame, a Dresden wall clock with old Majolica plaque of the Nativity scene, a pair of bleu de roi Sevres vases, Ormulu mount, with hand-painted battle scenes! a Chinese Kang Shi jar arid cover, and a pair of turquoise blue Sevres vases and stands. Carved ivory and antique jewellery are also included in the collection, which will be sold by Messrs. Richard Arthur, Limited, in the sale rooms, opposite the Town Hall, on May, 3, 4 and following days.
