BRITISH SHIPYARD F^'^U^ rk . TW was a tune Bon is that the financiers endeavoured to show how a shipyard should be ran. and failed. It was one of the foUies of the war period that anyone city" could do better than trained shil>huilders. The madness passed, but its effects remained. The reorganised comnguv has been fighting manfully aga-n. t heavy odds, and it has lost. So, the departure for sea of the Anglo American Oil Company s Chesapeake m January, the firm was left with no \e sel in hand. The yard is non s.lent. l n the other hand, Messrs. Ilarland & M olff —where the men who know have d»recttr-d operations without interference—have an increasing quantity of work to do. and can regard the future with hope and confidence.

A panic party, under the command of Lieutenant F. R. Hereford, abandoned the ship, and as the lifeboat, actin" as a lure, decoved the suomanne to within 50 yards of the Pargust, the latter opened out with her guns. The submarine took a heavy Ist. and her crew clambered out of the ®onning tower, holding up their hands. The Pargust ceased fire, whereupon the submarine began to move away.
