TONGAN CHOIR
PERFECT ENTERTAINMENT Unique in character and charming in its appeal, the concert by the Tongan Methodist Choir was one of the best entertainments staged in Auckland for many months. The Town Hall was packed last evening and the Islands visitors received the appreciation due to them. The youths of the choir possess voices of delightful purity, and their harmony is perfect. The bass voices are particularly fine. In the part singing the unison was as near perfection as possible. Apart from the singing there were several other fascinating numbers, particularly the native dances. An exhibition of fire-making by the old method of rubbing sticks together, canoe dances and native games added variety and charm to the entertainment. “John Peel,” “Old Mother Hubbard” and “Doctor Foster” were excellently done, and the “Soldiers’ Chorus” from “Faust,” and Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” took on a new lease of life as sung by the choir. The voices had the majesty of a beautifully-played organ. Perfect rhythm was expressed in the hand-dancing and the violent exercises performed with spears. The Tongan National Anthem was a natural ending to a novel delightful evening.
