MANUKA HELD UP

TRIMMERS GIVE TROUBLE Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The steamer Manuka was delayed in Lyttelton for several hours to-day owing to a dispute about the manning of the stokehold. When in Wellington on Wednesday the Manuka signed on three trimmers. This afterhoon, just before sailing time, at 3 p.m., the master was informed that the ship could not sail as the three trimmers were not financial members of their union. The company offered to pay the men’s arrears of union dues, but this was refused. The men were then paid off. Efforts to secure fresh men were at first unsuccessful, but eventually four men were signed on. In the meantime, two other men had gone ashore, and could not be found. The ship sailed after five hours’ delay.
