IN THE MARKET PLACE
APPLES MEET DULL SALE ORANGES MOVING STEADILY Cheap apples, especially the lower grades, is one of the features of business in the City Marts at the moment. Heavy supplies of apples are coming forward, but good sorts of Cox’s Orange are the only varieties meeting with anything like a firm demand. Lower grade apples and windfalls meet with practically no sale. The demand for pears is steady, good firm samples of dessert varieties selling freely. The position in regard to tomatoes remains unchanged. Producers at the lower end of the island continue to look upon Auckland as a dumping ground for their surplus holdings, and consequently values remain low. Grapes are slightly easier in price. The Tofua shipment of bananas arrived in good order to meet with a steady demand, repacks now being quoted up to 22s 6d a case. Oranges are moving steadily. Supplies are being drawn from California. In the field and garden produce section local potatoes at moment are practically unsaleable. Most varieties of green vegetables are offering freely and selling at late rates. Radishes are unsaleable. Ivumeras continue heavily supplied. Prices for poultry remain practically unchanged at last week’s closing rates. Good pullets continue to meet with a steady demand, and all birds close to laying are keenly sought after. Choice cockerels and heavy hens are also free sellers. The market remains short supplied with large-sized hen eggs, with a preponderance of the smaller grades. Luck eggs are slightly over supplied, the market weakening over the week.
