HOUSEHOLD HINTS The people who collect cuttings tor use, such as recipes, hints, addresses, would find paper folders a convenience for the purpose. They have tabs on the side on which may be printed an indication of the contents. These filling covers may be purchased at a few pence a dozen at most large stationers. A convenient size is 3 4 inches by 10. They can be kept in a pile on a shelf with the indicating tab projecting. It is a good idea to mount cuttings much in use, such as recipes, on squares of brown paper. Supposing you have cracks in a wall which you wish to stop, what would you do? Why, mix some plaster-of-paris with a little vinegar—not water, as the latter makes it set too quickly, whereas vinegar makes it pliable, and fill up the cracks. When you have a cloudy-looking decanter which you want to use but cannot, because of its appearance, what would you do to clean it?

Just put a piece of burning brown paper in the decanter, cover the mouth with your hand until the decanter is full of smoke, then rinse well. Result—a perfectly clear glass. •

If there are open fireplaces in the house, these may be effective or ineffective, according to the skill of the mason and the alertness of the builder. All too often the throat of such a Hue is wrongly built. A mason may carelessly or ignorantly give the wrong shape to the fireback and throat. Then the operation of kindling a fire is at-* tended by such annoyances as billows of smoke that come out into the room and roll up to the ceiling.
