NORTHCOTE BOROUGH
RECONSTRUCTION OF MAIN ROADS
Estimates to be submitted to the Main Highways Board for approval were discussed at length at a meeting of the Northcote Borough Council presided over last evening by the Mayor, Mx\ A. E. Greenslade. A report submitted by the overseer estimated the year’s maintenance to be £1,521 for Lake Road, and £CS3 for Onewa Road. If, however, complete reconstruction were to be undertaken this year, temporary repairs to the value of £464 would suffice. The cost of reconstructing the carriageway in concrete, subsidised by the Highways Board, would be £G,509 in Onewa Road and £17,600 in Lake Road. The continuation of concrete highways to the northern and western boundaries would cost, therefore, £24,109, half of which would be refunded by the Main Highways Board upon approval of the scheme. With other projected works that did not come within the scope of the Highways Board’s assistance, the borough would have to find £18,594. It was decided to apply for assistance in maintenance, until the reconstruction scheme should be put into operation. It was reported by the engineer that stormwater works at Denby Gully would be completed In two weeks. The Belle Vue Avenue reconstruction was also approaching completion. The road was ready for trimming and l oiling and the footpaths were being topdressed. Queen Street work was being carried out satisfactorily. The western part of the concrete paving would be ready for traffic in a few days. Scoria placed on the footpaths was boiDg trimmed and rolled, and damaged kerbing had been repaired.
