WIND CARRIES SPARKS BUILDINGS ENDANGERED (From Our Oxen Correspondent) OPOTIKI. To-day. j Debris from the big fire which I started early yesterday morning con- . tinued to burn all day. During the height of the fire the burning debris was carried high into the air, sparks being distributed over a wide area and causing anxiety among the residents. At one stage th* Opo.iki Timber Company’s yards, which are a considerable distance away, ' caught fire, the flames being quickly extinguished. A dwelling, owned by Mr. S. Anderson, over two chains away from the burning building, had a narrow escape from destruction. The wind drove j the flames in the direction «»£ the housee, which had to be protected with j boards from the flying spark-, and : water was also played on the .. alls.
