“FAILED TO FUNCTION”
RAILWAY ADVISORY BOARDS CANTERBURY OPINIONS Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. | The Railway Advisory Boards which j were set up about a year ago by the Minister of Railways, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, have failed to function and, as far as Canterbury is concerned, the board has not even held a meeting. When the scheme was announced by the Minister, he asked the various chambers of commerce to convene an inaugural meeting. The president of the Canterbury Chamber, Mr. C. P. Agar, was the convener of the local board. “There was no work offering, and the board could not advise on railway questions,” said Mr. Agar to-day. It was impossible for the board to do anything under its constitution as set down by the Railway Department, added Mr. Agar. There was also the difficulty of finauciug the board. The department would do nothing. A different reason for the failure Of the board is advanced by Mr. W. H. Windsor, secretary of the Builders’ Association. “It was because the Chamber of Commerce did not seem to want to go on with it,” he said. “As far as I know, we were the only ones who had anything for the board to do.”
