THE PERSONAL TOUCH
DIRECTOR OF HUPP MOTORS High appreciation of the scenic beauties of New Zealand and great interest in the signs of progress and prosperity throughout the Dominion, were expressed by Mr. .F. B. Sides (director of exports for the Hupp Motor Car Corporation, Detroit, TJ.S.A.), who is at present touring New Zealand. “My principal reason for making this trip,” states Mr. Sides, “is that we want to get acquainted with the people with whom we are doing business. I have covered all Europe except Russia. I did not like to go there, being afraid that I might not get out again. I have visited South Africa and Australia, and I am now doing New Zealand. Then I go back to England. “I also want to get direct, first-hand information on your market, because no one manufacturer can make a car to suit every market. The only thing is to find out what each market wants and build as near to its requirements as one can. That is what I am trying to find out on these trips. “I must confess that I was rather surprised to find such nice roads as I have found out here. Your country roads, I think, are very good. I drove by car from Auckland to Rotorua and all round Rotorua, taking four days to see all the places of interest there. These fine roads will be a great thing for your country. We in America believe that one of the things that have made for our prosperity is the good roads we have; and I may say that every country I have been in on these trips is to-day paying more attention to this feature of transportation than ever before. The automobile as we see it to-day, has, of course, ceased to be a luxury. It has become a necessity; and your people here use motorcars to a marvellous extent.”
