VARSITY TRAINING
COST LESS THAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ AUCKLAND ANOMALY In the Auckland education district university training costs the State less per head each year than secondary school training. statement was made in a report which Mr. R. O’Shea, registrar of Auckland University College, presented at yesterday’s meeting of the College Council. Excluding the special school of forestry there were 1,444 students at the University, on which the State spent £23,266, or £l6 2s 3d per head. The roll at the Auckland secondary schools was 2,394, on which £41,097, or £l7 3s 4d per head, was spent. With the school of forestry figures added the expenditure per head on University students is raised to £l6 13s 6d. The report stated that the position was one requiring immediate consideration by the University authorities; for it was generally recognised that the University unit cost more than the secondary school unit.
