HOCKEY AT MATAMATA
PIAKO ASSOCIATION (From Our Own Correspondent) MAT AM AT A, Monday. The balance sheet of the Piako Hockey Association, which was presented at the annual meeting of the association held at Matamata, Mr. Gardner Brown presiding, disclosed a credit balance of £1 Os 3d. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr. J. F. Vosper; president, Rev. Gardner Brown; vicepresidents, Messrs. B. C. Taylor and R. Hawes (Matamata), S. Harvey, Morr, Polsqn (Te Aroha), F. Walters (Waitoa); secretary, Mr. A. E. Wrigley; auditor, Mr. J. Lucas: management committee, Messrs. H. Ward, G. Hawes, J. M. Thompson and Moore: referees, Messrs. H. Sutherland, D. Whitehead, D. Hastie, Humphreys, Dickey, Ward, Carwarden, Grainger, Laver, P. Harvey, Mrs. Hawes and Miss Blackmore: delegates to Auckland Association, Messrs. L. C. Kent and Ralph Aver y, ladies’ delegate, Miss Michen. It was decided to establish the association’s headquarters at Matamata. A vote of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr. Humphreys was passed. The reversal of a decision given by the referee, Mr. H. Ward (Te Aroha) in a ladies’ match, Matamata v. Te Aroha, near the end of May, was a subject for much discussion. It appears that Mr. Ward in the first instance ruled in favour of Matamata by one point, but two days later wrote to the secretary reversing the decision, thus making the game a draw and incidentally upsetting the result of the whole competition. After reviewing the matter at some length, it was decided to refer the question to the Auckland Association.
