Markets and Money

A Review for Business Men

A ON THE ’CHANGE / MARKET IN GOOD TONE 5 INSURANCES QUIET A healthy tone was registered on •Change this morning, and a steady volume of business was put through outside the call room. In banks, Commercials are firmer, buyers at 28s 2d not attracting sellers. The market for most other scrip in this section remains steady at late quotations. Insurances are quiet with no alteration in the market. Westport Stocktons are still being dealt with on a market firm at 2s 5d for the ordinaries, with the only tendency at the moment upward. Northern Steamships were dealt with at 15s Id for the ordinaries, with more wanted at 15s. Timbers continue depressed with many sellers, but buyers hard to locate. Breweries are active around 45s 7id, with steady buyers in at 455. SALES REGISTERED Yesterday afternoon’s call:—On ’Change: Auckland Gas Cord.), 225; Wilsons Cement, 38s. IN THE MARKET PLACE FRESH BANANA SHIPMENT EGGS PRICES ERRATIC A fresh shipment of 15.000 cases of ! bananas from the Fiji group came to hand on the Tofua yesterday. Most lines of fruit and vegetables in the City Marts are selling freely with little alteration in values. fTH? market for apples remains steady, fairly large offerings of lower grade sorts . helping to keep the market down. Good dessert pears sell freely. With ample supplies still coming forward, the price of tomatoes registers little improvement. Local lemons are very scarce. The Fiji shipment of bananas was considerably smaller than late arrivals. A large portion of the shipment will be sold ex the ship’s side. In the field and garden produce section lettuces are heavily supplied, but the quality, generally, is not the best. Few local onions or potatoes are passing through the marts, and the greater portion of the offering of these vegetables is being drawn from the South. Generally it can bo said that the effect of the drought earlier in the season is passing away and green vegetables of all descriptions arc coming forward more freely. The egg market is rather erratic at the moment owing to the great variety of grades offering. The market is short of well-developed fowls’ eggs, and these sell at a high premium. Small and pullets eggs are oversupplied selling up to lOd below the top price, which has moved up to Is lOd a dozen.
