HEALTHIER CROPS
RESEARCH ON SEEDS AND PLANTS GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Sunday The losses in the Dominion caused by ravages of fungoidg bacterial and insect pests, have been estimated to amount to £2.500,000 a year. It is with the purpose of eliminating some of this huge loss that the Government has decided to subsidise the Empire Marketing Board's grant of £2,500. for the capital cost, and £2,500 per annum for the maintenance of a research station to investigate the *>eed and plant life of New Zealand. An announcement of the Governments decision was made yesterday by the Prime Minister in a statement. First the investigations will aim at discovering the best strains and best cultural management of all crop 6 aw pastures. Secondly it will strive to reduce the percentage of losses occasioned by inroads into plant disease, and thirdly, by testing, standardisation, and certification, seeds and plants of known productivity and quality will be produced, and an important local wholesale and retail trade in high-class seeds built up.
