FATHER’S DEPRAVITY

GRAVE OFFENCE ON GIRL TEN YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT “I cannot see one redeeming feature. You have, on your own admission. been tampering with your daughter for a long time, even when she was of a tender age. You will go to gaol with hard labour for 10 years.’* These were the words used by Mr. Justice Blair in the Supreme Court this morning when dealing with William Charles Chapman, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of incest at Tc Kuiti. Ml*. Xoblc, who appeared for the prisoner, said he could say nothing in favour of Chapman. He could merely mention that prisoner had suffered a fracture of the skull on two occasions, and was not quite normal. He was over 40 years of age.

In passing sentence, his Honouv stated that Chapman had practically committed rape, in that he had used threats and force toward his daughter. The case was one in which men like the prisoner had to be put .where they could do no further harm. Prisoner seemed unaffected, outwardly, by the heavy sentence.
