MAORI RELICS FOUND IN WEST COAST CAYE
RED-HAIRED RACE An old rock shelter on the Atwhat a Stream, on the West Cas between Piha and Muriwai, rerwle some interesting Maori relics to STrevor Lloyd, the Auckland et<4* during the Easter holidays. The most notable And was a ft* polished whalebone mere, about 11 inches in length. Two wooden coat, with the usual long teeth, end ami ber of pieces of wood, presunabused for fire lighting, were also fo covered. A stone slab, squared on tie sides, and weighing about Ml: showed signs of having been usedte grinding mineral pigment. A jks shell actually contained some ot ftt pigment. There was also a bns consisting ot human hair tied with • strand of flax. In rock holloas the same vicinity Mr. Lloyd ca» across bunches of red hair. There is no record of Maori wit* ment in this district since Eurofaa occupation.
