MONTE CARLO'S DOGS

WAR ON THE RIVIERA POODLE IN HANDBAG A girl astonished ( he promenaders on the terrace here to-day by carrying her pet griffon dog in her handbag (recently wrote the Monte Carlo correspondent of the ‘‘‘Daily Mirror"). There was method in her madness, lor at the moment I should say there are more dogs of all shapes and sizes to be seen on the terrace here at midday than in any other health resort in Europe. French, German and Russian visitors have their Alsatians, collies, griffons. poodles, Poms and dachshunds. Add to these a selection of bulldogs, Pekinese, Yorkshire terriers, Sealyhams, in fact, pretty well every known breed, and you can imagine the noise when they converse! In many instances they are so pampered and overfed that they develop a liver, become truculent, and start a series of private wars, much to the annoyance of retired - Anglo-Indian Colonels who are trying to enjoy a quiety forty winks in the warm sunshine on the terrace seats. Imagine the Inn when Frau Blank from Berlin tries to stop her dachshund chewing up the pet poodle of Madame X from Paris. Neither speaks the other's language, and the situation is critical until Colonel So-and-So, late of the Umpteenth Punjabis, wakes from his sleep and stops the canine war by the simple expedient of picking the poodle up and handing it over to its tearful owner. I should not like to guess at the number of lifelong friendships broken because middle-aged Englishwomen have, m a weak moment, allowed their pet Poms to get off the lead anvwhere near the scenes of the daily canin» Armageddons.

Recently the fighting has been so imense and the casualties so numerous that it is rumoured that a Dogs’ League of Nations is to be formed! I he girl Who carried her dog in her nandbag is my nomination for the presidency of this organisation.
