A TRUE HEREFORD
POINTS FOR CONSIDERATION A correspondent of the "American Hereford Journal'’ discusses in a recent isue the essentials of a good Hereford as seen through American eyes. He favoured a rich cherry red. with not too much white on the neck and legs, and none on the back, as the most desirable from the practical standpoint of maintaining an attractive uniformity in the matter of colour. Of late years, he says, a tendency to tolerate increasing amounts of white on the back, neck, legs, and flanks has been growing. “We should discriminate more severely against excessive light or dark colours. These suggestions may seem to emphasise too strongly so-called fancy points, but such is not the case.” “The quality of the coat of hair is also an important factor in standardising Hereford cattle, for it is an index to the quality and texture of flesh. If the coat is coarse or wiry or harsh it indicates a lack of quality of flesh. If on the other hand the coat is fine and soft, with the feel of fur, it indicates flesh of fine quality and texture, which is so desirable. It is essential that the kind of coat of hair an individual has should be one of the important considerations in the selection of breeding I-lerefords.”
