Saving Their Dogs
Threatened with the destruction of their dogs if they could not pay 7s 6d licence fee, poor owners of dogs in London appealed to “The Daily Mirror,” which started a “Save The Dogs” Fund. The sum of £1,084 was subscribed within a few days. By the generosity of these readers, reported “The Mirror,” the lives of nearly 2,200 dogs have been saved. At the offices of the National Canine Defence League the staff are busy investigating the appeals of dogowners, and in genuine cases the licence money is paid. “We are more delighted than we can say at the magnificent response to the appeal,” said Mr. Charles R. Johns, the secretary of the league, “and all dog-lovers will be pleased to learn that so many pets will be enabled to stay with their owners for another year.” Many of the contributions came from people who could ill afford to send money, but who could not bear the thought of devoted dogs being destroj’ed through the poverty of their owners.
Contributions ranged from small sums sent by children with “doggies” of their own to amounts of £25 and £lO from titled people, the same spirit of generosity prompting all the senders.
