TWO INTERESTING LINKS j WITH NERLI, PAINTER | OF THE FAMOUS STEV- ] ENSON PORTRAIT, WILL ! BE SOLD IN AUCKLAND j ON MONDAY I 1
PERRETT COLLECTION Two interesting links with the New Zealand stay of G. Nerli, the Italian painter, whose portrait of Robert Louis Stev-nson has attracted world-wide attention, will be offered for sale in Auckland on Monday. 'J'HE pictures are in the collection which Mr. J. Douglas Perrett, who was a friend and fellow-painter with the "'tinguished visitor, proposes to disperse. One is a small study in oils of Mr. Perrett, painted in Duir —j years ago, when they both shared the same studio. Nerli collectors will also be interested in the charcoal sketch of Miss Nixon, the finished portrait of whom is now on the walls of the Dunedin Art Gallery. The sitter was the daughter of a well-known ir in the Southern city. The small Perrett- portrait was painted when Nerli was receiving several commissions for this type of work. There must be quite a number of others of this size in the Dominion. A study from life, the subject being a spectacled old man reading, by v. H. O’Keefe, though unfinished, is not the least interesting work in the collection. This Dunedin painter was a fellow-student in Paris with Goldie. The water colour, “Rhelms Cathedral,” by E. Nevill, which is included in the collection for sale purposes, should attract attention from buyers. It is one of the soundest pieces of work on view, admirably drawn, atmospherically perfect, exhibiting a creditable technique. Mr. Perrett Is well represented by a judicious selection of New Zealand beauty spots, among which Auckland is by no means neglected. More than half of the pictures are by this Auckland artist. It is Mr. Perrett’s intention to reside permanently in the South in future.
