GOVERNMENT HOUSE DANCE

FIFTEEN DEBUTANTES MAKE THEJR CURTSEY Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Alice Fergusson i gave a delightful dance at Government House last evening, when 13 debutantes were presented, and Capitaine de Frigate P. Auverny and a number of officers from the French war sloop Cassiopee were among the guests. The grounds were illuminated with twinkling coloured lights that shed a rosy glow upon the lawns, and the ballroom was attractively decorated with large hanging baskets of fern. Feathery fronds of bamboo lined the walls and the stage was banked with fern and vividly-coloured dahlias and chrysanthemums. The lounges and drawing-rooms were bright with bowls of flowers in various autumn colourings, and in the dining-room, where supper was served, crystal vases of cosmos gave effective colour relief. The dresses of the women guests were charming in their return to femininity, and few of the very abbreviated skirts of former seasons were to be seen. Sheer velvet, that most regal of this year’s evening fabrics, was seen in gowns of classic simplicity and in youthfully piquant picture frocks. Colours were beautiful in their variety, and the pure white of the debutantes’ frocks was thrown into striking relief by the background of vivid tones worn by many of the guests, and by the brave scarlet anu gold of the uniforms of the military and naval guests. Their Excellencies entered the ballroom at half past eight, and dancing commenced then and continued until after midnight.
