STEERS STAMPEDE

CHILDREN HURT (Special to THE SUN) WANGANUI, Thursday. When a mob of young • steers was being driven from the Castlecliff freezing works to the abattoirs, they broke away and stampeded into the Castlecliff school grounds. The children were coming out of school at the time and some of them ran out into the road, frightening the cattle. The children fled in all directions: pursued by the steers. One child fainted and several others fell and hurt themselves. Four steers died from exhaustion. Finally the steers were rounded up and driven into a patch of lupins.
