NEWMARKET RELIEF

LOAN OF £BOO AUTHORISED WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. An Order-in-Council gazetted to-day authorises the Newmarket Borough Council to borrow £BOO to provide relief works for "-'employed. The interest is 53 per cent., and repayment is to be made in 25 years. The £BOO for Newmarket is the final portion of a loan of £3,000 sought last winter. Authority was secured for £2,200, which was spent on Carlton Road and George Street. The extra £ SOO now authorised will be spent this winter on Sarawai Street, some improvements to which have been made out of revenue. The amount will not carry a subsidy, as the Public Works Department holds that labour will not absorb 60 per cent, of the expenditure, an opinion from which the Newmarket engineer differs.
