To-Day’s Turf
AT HIS BEST AUSSIE BEATS AWARERE AVONDALE GALLOPS Considering that it is the day before the meeting, there was not such a great deal in the nature of good gallops to record at Avondale this morning. The weather was overcast but fine, and the course in splendid order. The trestles on the course proper were out fully 60 feet again, and the plough track, too, was in demand. Aussie finished in great style in a spin over four furlongs, leaving Awarere standing over the final furlong, •and it is apparent that the •'freak" sprinter is now at the top of his form: therefore he promises to start at a short price in the All-Aged Stakes tomorrow. BEST OF THE MORNING In running his half-mile yesterday in 52 4-5, Covent Garden was aii out, yet it was a fine effort. Aussie and Awarere went over the same ground this morning, and after keeping to gether for three furlongs Aussie drew out, to finish three lengths ahead of his companion in 52 15. At the end. the Fortafix gelding was going like the champion he is. Joy King wag not troubled to run half a mile in 53 3-5, going well within himself, and he promises to strip a fit horse to take on Aussie in the AllAged Stakes to-morrow. Ladies’ Boy came home over three furlongs in 41 2-5, and could have done better. He appears to have improved a good deal since winning at Te Aroha. PLENTY OF DASH Despito his big impost, Star Stranger will be one of the prime fancies in the Foley Memorial to-morrow. This morning he infused plenty of cTasli into his task, which was one over six furlongs, taking 1.22 2-5. Lucy Rose and Takuranga were on terms in front of Viburnum over half .a mile in 54. Whalsa King. another improved sprinter, went three furlongs in a. steady 39 2-5. , White Wings indulged in strong work, sprinting home the last furlong. Valkon. looking well, and Aurumavis, covered five furlongs in 1.7 4-5, and Nancy Leo moved nicely over half a mile in 55. ON THE IMPROVE Romford, whose recent form has been good, and King Merv, had little between them at the end of an easy seven furlongs, the time being 1.37, but the last four were cut out in 55 1-5. Alonsoa ran tlie last four of live furlongs in 56, easily defeating Maori Boy. Aston moved smartly over the first furlong, and was then eased to threequarter pace from the half-mile. Miss Mercia sprinted Tour furlongs in 55 3-5, and Lord Abbey was in front of British King at the end of four furlongs in 55. Elope defeated Te Atiawa over three furlongs in 39 3-5, and Waltzer and King Arch finished together from the four furlongs post in 55 3-5. ON THE PLOUGH Papatu, who is to be ridden by Iv. Gill, on the outside, was going better than Oration at the end of a mile in 1.44, . and Kaihoremai and Waning Light finished together in 1.18 4-5 for six furlongs. Among others to be noted doing useful tasks were Lady Cintra, Desert Glow, Cybele, Lysander, Covent Garden, Wyoming, Mervette, and others. GREYMOUTH FIXTURE ACCEPTORS OF TO-MORROW Press Association.
