FOUR HUNDRED MORE MOTORISTS JOIN The Auckland Automobile Association elected no fewer than 397 new members at a meeting of the council last evening. This is the record number of new members for any month since the association was formed. The chairman, Dr. J. Howard Lawry, told the council that the membership was now approaching 7,000, which makes the Auckland body by far the largest in New Zealand. The appointment of the three motor-cycle scouts has had such good results that the council decided to appoint a fourth* The new patrol will work in the Hamilton-Waikato-Te Awamutu area. NEWMARKET TRAFFIC The council discussed the traffic congestion at Broadway, Newmarket, particularly the haphazard stopping of buses, which seldom used the area set aside for them. A deputation was appointed to suggest to the Newmarket Borough Gouncil the advisability of taking action to prevent the present practices. The deputation will point out the possibility of using the triangle at present used by taxis as a stopping place. ■ A report from the city engineer denied that Auckland water, which, he said, was free from nitrates and alum, was harmful to motor-car radiators.
