DIX IN “SHANGHAI BOUND”
Richard Bix has Landed r.nd reports the situation well in hand. Do#n the iangtse River in a dirty Chinese rit er boat. Dix comes with a cargo of American refugees fleeing from hun-ger-mad pirates. And he brings boat to safety, too. but onlv after one of the most thrilling fights seen on local screens this year. The picture is ''Shanghai Bound." Dix s newest Paramount starring vehicle, the current feature at the Hippodrome and Empress Theatres. The supporting east is exceptionally good. Evidently Dix insists that his pictures have able players In them. Mary Brian, who played in two of his recent pictures, is again the leading woman in this one. As an American society girl, she has one of the best roles of her career. Other players are well cast, including the 15© Chinese who are seen in the atmospheric scenes. But to Dix goes the major credit, of course. He appears as Jim Jlucklin. captain of the Hoi Ping Yangtse steamer. Up the river he finds a party of Americans. Down the river he takes them to the haven of Shanghai’s protected zone. There’s fighting all the way down, with Dix in the midst of it, in a fist-swinging, teeth-gritting role that fits his talents perfect!-..
Richard Arlen is to play the lead in Clara Bow s next Paramount picture. • Ladies of the Mob.” William Wellman. who directed •Wings” and ‘The Legion of The Condemned.” will handle the megaphone. Arlen is soon to bo seen in ■Under the Tonto Rim." with Mary Brian.
