AT AVONDALE
WORK ON NEW COURSE COVENT GARDEN AND HIPO | Considerable interest was taken in i the work-outs at Avondale this morning, several gallops being time.d. Both the plough and the outside of the course proper were available, the trestles on the latter being out 60 feet. The plough is in splendid order, although it has not quite settled down. Perhaps the most interesting of the various trials were those placed to the j credit of Hipo and Covent Garden. On The Plough | Among those that were given easy tasks here were Star Stranger, Jpy King and Valkon. Hipo finished in front and appeared to be doing it much better than True Blood and Branson over a mile, which was cut out in the good time of 1.43. the last seven furlongs occupying 1.30 With his light weight Hipo may bo prominent in the Foley Memorial on Saturday. Oration and Ivyngzone were fairly close together at the end of seven furlongs in 1.31 2-5. Course Proper All the gallops on the course proper were timed from the barriers. The best of the morning was a slick half-mile by Covent Garden. In company with his stable mate, Lysander. both ridden by fair weights, the Ab- j surd three-year-old was bowling along \ easily in front of Lysander, the time j being 52 4-5. Covent Garden is en- j gaged in the sprint on Saturday, and j on this gallop he should be prominent. The next best time to the above over the four furlongs was registered by Prodice and White Wings, the two-vear-olds running the distance in 53 4-5. Prodice appeared to be going better than the chestnut. Josie Melville moved very freely in a spin over five furlongs, taking 1.6 4-5, and from the same peg Grand Tea beat Betty Zane in 1.2 2. British King, with the woiet of the weights, was a couple of lengths behind Aurumavis at the end of five furlongs in 1.9. Desert Glow Goes Well
Desert Glow hopped off just in front of the seven-furlong post and ran home in. 1.34, making a brave showing. He was picked up at about the fivefurlongs by Cybele, and she -ran her last three furlongs in 37 3-5. Princess Rain easily defeated Golden Krist over four furlongs in 55. Aston came home from the five furlongs in 1.10, and he appeared to be making a noise. In his only run at Ellerslie, last Monday, the righthanded way of running did not suit him, but he may be more used to it at his next outing. Cullgie and Maori Boy went half a mile in 55, Glenetta taking a second longer immediately afterwards. Other Gallops Double Mint and Auriculus ran seven furlongs in 1.35, cutting out the last six in 1.22 1-5. Both went nicely, and Viburnum, who jumped off in company, was easily defeated. Miss Mercia was given steady work, and hit out well, Lucy Rose also being given a light task. Melissa could have improved on 56 for four furlongs, and Lady Cintra, who seems to be on the improve, covered seven furlongs in 1.35 1-5.
