North Island Titles (From Our Own Correspondent.) * TE AROHA, Wednesday. The final of the North Island women’s singles tennis championship was decided this afternoon, Airs. Waters (Te Aroha) beating Miss Potter (Auckland), 6—o, 6—l. The result gives both the single titles to the Te Aroha Tennis Club. South Island Titles Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. At the South Island hard courts tennis championship tourney to-day C. E. Malfroy (Wellington) beat C. Angas (Canterbury) in the men’s singles final, I—6, 6—4, 6—l, 7—9, 9—7. It was a grim struggle, lasting over three hours. G. Ollivier and T. W. Patterson won the men’s doubles title, defeating N. R. C. Wilson and G. Sumpter, 7—o. 4 —6, 7 —5, 6—2. Miss M. Gibson won the women’s singles final, defeating Aliss G. aßnkin, 6—2, 6—2. Whangarei Games (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Wednesday. The final matches in the Whangarei Tennis Club’s tourney were played today, and resulted as follows: Men’s Championship Doubles.—Entwistle and Martin (Auckland) defeated and Pickmere (Whangarei), Mixed Championship Doubles. —Charters and Miss Stevens defeated O’Brien and Miss Nicholls, 6 —4, 3—6, 6—3. Th© finals in th© Cambridge Easter tournament w'ere played yesterday, with the exception of the men’s handicap singles, which will not be completed until Saturday. Following are the results in the finals: Women’s Handicap Singles.—Miss Shand defeated Aliss Armstrong, 6—2, 6 — 2. Women's Handicap Doubles. —Alisses Thompson and Shand defeated Alisses B. and H. Crowther, B—lo, 6—2, 6—4. Mixed Handicap Doubles.—Robinson and Aliss Shand beat Entwistle and Aliss Shand, 6—2, 6—3. Men's Handicap Doubles. —Robinson and Alorrison defeated Feisst and Jamieson, 6—2. Hustler, one of the car owners recently concerned in applying for a bus licence for Stanley Bay, complained that he had been required by the traffic inspector to place his car on the taxi rank and remove the destination sign, Stanley Bay. He wanted the council's advice, but was referred to the council-in-committee, which suggested that he obtain legal advice, if he felt that he had cause for complaint.
An offer from the ratepayers of Jubilee Avenue to pay for retaining walls in front of their sections, if the footpath is lowered to permanent level, was conveyed by Mr. Gainor Jackson. The offer was favourably commented on and an estimate of the cost of the work is to be obtained.
Tenders for stone facing the sea wall on Queen’s Parade were received; Messrs. Grinter Bros.’ price £6,423, was accepted; the engineer’s estimate was £6,276; £7O separated the two lowest tenderers.
Portion of the Defence Department land, at Narrow Neck, comprising the point of land at the west end of the camp site is to be entrusted to the borough for beautifying purposes.
BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH KAURI POINT DISCUSSED The Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening, Mr. K. O. i>keates presiding. The waterworks engineer reported for the month ended March 31 that the quantity of water pumped was 3,458,000 gallons. Bake Takapuna was at present sin below high water sea level. The clearing of the weeds from around the intake had improved the quality of the water. Mr. A. Harris, M.P., wrote with respect to moving the post office to Highbury Corner that he was making representations to the Postmaster-General in support of the council’s request. In the event of the department not agreeing to shift the present office, he suggested it might be wise to propose the establishment of a branch office at Highbury. A letter was received from Dr. Chesson, medical officer for health, stating he inspected a building in Birkenhead and found that the builder had departed from the plans for which a permit had been obtained, the alteration making the building insanitary. The council supported Dr. Chesson in the matter and decided to inform the builder that the plan must be adhered to. Cr. Turley gave notice that at the next meeting he would move, ‘That this council consider the question of inaugurating a municipal transport o The 6 Mayor, Mr. 33. G.
