Olympic Fund is Poorly Supported
AUCKLAND APATHETIC Mr. H. Amos, chairman of the New Zealand Olympic Association, who lectured in Auckland on “New Zealand Olympic Representation, will return to Wellington disappointed at the apathy of Aucklanders. Only two weeks before the Olympic team is supposed to sail, and with £ 4,000 yet to be collected, there was an attendance of only 18 at the meeting last evening. The Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, presided. Mr. Amos said that sufficient money had been raised to send away the six athletes originally selected, but that £I,OOO was needed from each of the four main centres to send a rowing eight. Mr. Amos considered it imperative that the rowers should go, as competent critics were of the opinion that the crew would do well. “If Wellington can raise £I,OOO, and it looks as if it will,” Mr. Amos continued, “Auckland will have to do the same, or better, and Canterbury, with the majority of the selected men, must also raise the required amount.” A history of New Zealand’s representation at the Games was sketched by the speaker. The New Zealand team, whether or not it includes the oarsmen, will sail by the Remuera on April 28. On arrival in England, the athletes will go into training with the British teams before leaving for Amsterdam, where the Games will be decided, from July 28 to August 12.
