SAMOAN POLICE FORCE
AUCKLAND DETACHMENT LEAVES TRAINING AT TRENTHAM To join the detachment of military police that is to be dispatched to Samoa a party of 22 men under the charge of Lieut. R. S. Judson, V.C., left by train for Wellington last evening. AN arrival at Wellington the squad will go into camp at Trentham with recruits from other parts of the Dominion, where they will undergo a short course of training. The force will comprise 74 officers and men and will be under the charge of Major P. H. Bell, of Dunedin. The Government steamer Tutanekai, now at Auckland, will be used to convey the men to Samoa, and will sail from here on April 21. After-wards the vessel will bring back to Auckland the marines who were landed at Samoa from the warships Dunedin and Diomede.
Nearly 200 applications were received for service in the military police and the men were subjected to a rigorous medical examination. The men who paraded last evening were of a particularly fine stamp, and were mostly from the city and suburban districts.
