Electoral Changes Complicate Seats

CHOOSING CANDIDATES AUCKLAND PROSPECTS Geographical changes in electorates throughout the Dominion have complicated the choice of Parliamentary candidates, and in some districts embarrassment probably will be felt through the intrusion of independent men into party camps. Auckland districts, which, have been materially altered by the Boundaries' Commission, are already showing signs of this difficulty. , For the Waikato seat the sitting member, Mr. D. S. Reid, will represent the Reform Party, and Mr. S. N. Ziman will stand as an Independent Reformer. Mr. F. Lye’s candidature as a Liberal has already been announced. The intentions of Mr. A. M. Samuel, who has been deprived of a seat by the abolition of the Ohinemuri electorate, are not yet determined. During last session Mr. Samuel said he intended to stand for the new Hauraki seat, w T hich cuts into the western portion of Thames, an.d embraces part of the Hauraki Plains, but if Mr. T. W. Rhodes does not offer himself again for the Thames district—it is suggested that his elevation to the Lpper House is possible —Mr Samuel might cross the border and stand there. Mr. J. N. Massey, of Puni, Pukekohe, who has been on the border line of selection on several occasions, has been suggested for the new Hauraki seat, but this is unconfirmed. Two Reform candidates—Mr. E. 11. Potter and Miss Ellen Melville—-will divide the Reform vote in Roskill. Mr. W. L. Martin, the Labour member, will endeavour to hold the Raglan seat, while two names, Mr. Campbell Johnstone and Mr. Walter Seavill, are mentioned as possible Reform candidates.

The Hon. J. A. Young will again con test Hamilton, which he has represented since the seat was created. Mr. S. Lye will stand as a Liberal. Mr. C. E. Macmillan, Reform member for Tauranga, may be opposed by Mr. H. Poland, who represented Ohinemuri for many years. Mr. J. C. Rolleston will stand n the Reform interest for Waitomo, ad Mr. W. J. Broadfoot is to contest the seat for the new United Party.
