Wright Wins North Island Singles

TENNIS AT TE AROHA SURPRISE IN WOMEN’S SINGLES (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE AROHA, To-day. There was a big surprise in the North Island women's singles championship semi-final this morning when Mrs. Waters, first lady. Te Aroha. beat- Miss Knight. Auckland, €—l, 3—6, 6—3. Miss Knight was off her game and Mrs. Waters’ steadiness won the day. It was an exciting match from end to end. The final of the women’s singles between Miss Potter. Auckland. and Mrs. Waters will be played to-day. The last day of the championships was marred by rain which set in before dinner. The North Island singles title went to Wright (Te Aroha), who beat Brough (Hamilton) in three straight sets, two played in a bad light. In the first set Wright led to 4 —l, but then lapsed into errors. He finally won, 7—5. The second set was a base-line duel, in which Wright used a crosscourt ■ backhand effectively. Brough pushed him hard, but lost 4—6. The third set was won comfortably by the Te Aroha player. One of the day’s surprises was the defeat of Morrison (Auckland) by Cox (Hinuera). Mr. C. E. McMillan. M.P.. presented the singles trophy to Wright after the day’s play.
