Lusk’s Fine Win

AUCKLAND GOLF TITLE SENSATIONAL FINAL . Few golf championships have | finished with a more sensational run of figures than those which | H. B. Lusk produced yesterday j afternoon to win the provincial 1 golf title from T. A. Goulding, the last remaining challenger. WHEN Lusk • started home the Governor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson were spectators. Four threes with a lonely four in the middle to break the monotony, and five holes after the turn the match was very definitely over—s and 4. There had been nothing like this on the outward journey. Lusk had taken 40 and Goulding 42, and the former was 2 up. It must be admitted that Lusk was up because of Goulding’s mistakes. Over-anxiety seemed to claim the Titirangi ex-champion, and he was looking for the result of his shot several times before the shot was made. His woods were working fairly well, but his irons were not, and his putting was poor. Meanwhile Lusk was not playing spectacular golf, but was seizing his opportunities. GOULDING’S FIREWORKS Goulding took three putts on the second and lost it, and became two down at the third, where Lusk laid his third, a chip over the mounds, stone dead. Two poor fives followed, and then Goulding had bad luck to miss a win at the fifth in a perfect four. Lusk, from trouble with his first, saved with a long putt. Three putts put Goulding three down at the sixth, but he got one back at the “Mounds” with a 10ft putt, after Lusk had played two poor ones and then laid his third dead. The ninth was halved in sixes, and then the fireworks started. Goulding did the next five holes 3 4 4 4 4. Lusk equalled the three, then had drive, chip, 12ft putt to win the 11th in three, drive, masliie, two putts, to halve the 12th, drive, mashie-niblick, 10ft putt to win the 13th in three, and drive, mashie, 30ft putt to end the match with a three at the 14th. Par golf was quite useless. Following the final, the prizes won during the tournament were presented by the Governor-General. The play-off of the tie in Monday’s medal competition resulted in a win for L. J. Croxson, while H. W. Tidmarsh won the play-off in the bogey competition. The bogey match played yesterday morning resulted in a win fpr J. S. White (13), 4 up, the next best card being that of R. F. Johnston (10), 3 up.

OUTSIDE TITLES

Dale at Taranaki (From Our Own Correspondent) NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. The Taranaki amateur golf championship was won to-day by H. P. Dale, the young Eltham player, who defeated A. S. Masell, New Plymouth, in the final round by 4 up and 2 to play. Some remarkable golf was witnessed, a feature being Dale’s sensational putting on the parched greens, which until misty rain fell during the match and deadened them were extremely fast and difficult. For the nine holes going out Dale took only 10 putts, most of them ranging from 15 to 30 feet. He went out in five strokes less than bogey and came home in one over bogey. Hasell, except for one or two easy putts, which he missed, played consistently well, taking only four more strokes than Dale for the round, and equalling bogey. But Dale’s phenomenal putting set him an uphill fight all the way. Blythe at Manawatu Press Association. PALMERSTON N., Tuesday. In the final of the Manawatu golf championship H. Blythe (Shannon! beat O. H. Druce (Manawatu), 3 up and 2. Duncan Wins Again Press Association. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Wellington provincial golf championship has again been won by A. D. S. Duncan.
