STIRRING CLASSIC STRUGGLE

HYNANNA’S BRILLIANT WIN (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The Canterbury Jockey Club concluded its autumn carnival at Riccarton to-day in dull but fine weather. The track dried up quickly as the day advanced, but it was a trifle on the dead side. A poor crowd was in attendance. The totalisator handled £ 28,389, making £64.266 for the meeting, as against £70,317 10s last year. An unfortunate happening occurred at the conclusion of the Great Autumn Handicap. C. Giesler, trainer of Set Sail, being severely kicked by Oratrix. Moratorium Again As a result of his easy victory on the opening day. Moratorium was backed down to odds on for the Peerswick Handicap. After three furlongs had been covered Karitane and Crossbow showed the way to Moratorium and Tarleton, but nearing the home turn the favourite moved up. Ellis slipped Moratorium through at the false rail, and quickly settling the leaders, went on to score a comfortable victory from Crossbow. Karitane was a fair third, with Tarleton last. Consistent Rin Tin Tin Concetrate was entrusted with most money for the Autumn Nursery Handicap, but there was also solid backing for Chide and Rin Tin* Tin. Merivale, Chide and .Rin Tin Tin were prominent early, and on entering the course proper Great Star was in charge. Great Star led at the distance, but finishing well, Rin Tin Tin beat Concentrate by a length. Great Star was half a length away third, followed by Nightmarch, Merivale, Chide and ImpertinImprovcd Considerably The Yaldhurst Handicap resulted in a victory for the Clarenceux gelding Sir Roy. He ran a poor race in the Sockburn Handicap on opening day, but improved considerably on that performance to-day, and showed much more dash. Nincompoop was the leader when the field had settled down, and he showed the way along the back to Battle Colours, Stormy, Huey Locket and First Sight. Nincompoop was first to turn for home, but when straightened up Battle Colours took charge, only to be displaced in the lead a little farther on by First Sight and then Sir Roy. Sir Roy led 100 yards from the post, and in a punishing finish beat First Sight by a head. Huey Locket was two lengths away third, while the next to finish were Battle Colours and Stormy. Another Double Winner The Addington Handicap was thought to be a duel between Barrvanda and Scarflight. and between them they carried the bulk of the investments. Star flight was always in chandy position, and taking charge a furlong from home, beat ihe outsider Amor by a length. Philippic ran a good race into third place, and showed improvement on his first day’s effort. Hynanna’s Fine Effort Rapier looked very well when paraded for the Great Autumn, and was backed down to favourite. The field got away to a good start, and Thorndale immediately ran to the front. Passing the mile post Thorndale showed the way to Assurance, Lady Desmond and Tresham. There was little alteration during the next two furlongs, and except that Hynanna had improved his position there was no change until four furlongs from

home. Thorndale and' Assurance led into the straight, but once headed for home Lady Desmond hit the front. Lady Desmond led past the distance, but finishing in great style, Hynanna beat her home by a length. Oratrix was two lengths away third, followed by Set Sail, Assurance and Front Rank. Rapier was a bad last. After the race, R. J. Mackie, rider of Hynanna, said: “I clid not get a good run in the early part, but along the back I worked my way into a good position. At the half-mile my mount

was pulling very hard, .and was going so well at that stage that I knew he would win. He was galloping very freely turning for home, and once I headed Lady Desmond the rest was easy.” An Exciting Duel Reremoana was at short odds for the Challenge Stakes, but it took him all his time to beat Cimabue, who was the least backed of the three runners. Cimabue was first to show out, but Eulalie soon joined him in the lead, and the pair led into the straight from Reremoana. At the false rail Cimabue shot to the front, and then Reremoana challenged. The pair ran stride forVstride for 50 yards, but -Reremoana wore his younger rival down over the last bit and beat him home by a head. Eulalie was six lengths away third. At Her Best Golden Armour repeated her first day’s victory when she annexed the Papanui Handicap. She was always racing in the van, and though strongly challenged over me last 100 yards, she beat Rotor home by a head. Wild Work, who finished well, was a length and a-half away third, followed closely by Valves and Honeycomb. Last to Crown Area The meeting concluded with the Templeton Handicap, for which Booster was backed as unbeatable. Finora was the early leader, with Gold Brick and Booster in close attendance. Finora retired at the straight entrance, where Gold Brick took charge. Booster led inside the distance post, but finishing in great style Crown Area easily headed Booster and went on to score one of the easiest wins of the meeting. Solrose was three lengths behind Booster in third place, while the next to finish were Gold Brick and Polydectes. Concluding results: GREAT AUTUMN HANDICAP Of £3,000; li miles. 2 HYNANNA, 9.6, R. J.
