ELLERSLIE AT ITS BEST

MASK’S AUTUMN HANDICAP

SATRAiP’S EASY VICTORY IN CLASSIC TEST

THE concluding day’s racing of the A.R.C. autumn meeting was held at Ellerslie yesterday under the most favourable conditions, a light drizzling rain having spent itself some time before the first race was run. The meeting was a splendid success throughout, with the racing providing even better finishes than on Saturday.

THE course looked well after the first day’s racing. There was a large attendance, although the threatening weather in the forenoon no doubt kept many away. In keeping with all Ellerslie meetings, there was no cause for complaint in respect to the management, everything going off according to programme.

Mask, who had won the President’s Handicap on Saturday, captured the Autumn Handicap, again returning a fine price and making Mr. G. M. Currie’s fourth win at the meeting. The minor placings were occupied by Town Bank and Princess Ronnie. The sprint, tho Huia Handicap, developed into a scramble nearing the winning post. Aussie, carrying his big weight, scored handsomely from Joy King and Nancy Lee. Satrap made no race of the Great Northern St. Leger, leading all the way to win easily. Prodice sprang a mild surprise in the two-year-old contest, and Wiltshire won in easy fashion the Autumn Steeplechase, thereby showing that Ellerslie’s famous hill holds no terrors for him. The Totaiisator Yesterday the electric totalisator put through £ against £88,178 on the concluding day of the autumn meeting twelve months ago, a decrease of £2,698?;. On Saturday and Monday the machine staff handled £171,943, which represented an increase of £2,069?; over last year’s total, £169,8751. Last year, however, there were fourteen races, against sixteen on this occasion. There were two inquiries yesterday. The first was into some trouble on the flat in the Trial Hurdles about four and a-half furlongs from home, and the other into the jostling that occurred near the finish of the open sprint. In neither case was any action taken. Notes on yesterday’s racing and details of concluding results follow: Cynthia N. Wins Comfortably Of tho 18 runners in the Nelson Handicap, Cynthia N. £1,123 was favourite at fine odds, with good support also on hand for Star Comet £1,070, Newbury £B9O, Liaison £B2O and King Willonyx £741. At the start Respirator, and King Willonyx appeared to get caught in the tapes, Diamond Queen and Arch Queen being the first to get away, followed by Miss Mercia*, Highflown, Welkne, Newbury, Cynthia N., Master Clements, Liaison, Winsome Boy and Cybele. At the end of a furlong Miss Mercia had gone to the front and led past the five furlongs from Diamond Queen. Newbury, Cybele, Highflown. Arch Queen, Cynthia N., Welkne, Master Clements, Winsome Boy, Liaison and Taurimu. Crossing the top and into the straight Miss Mercia still led Diamond Queen, with Cybele, Newbury, Welkne, Cynthia N., Arch Queen, Highflown, Respirator and Taurimu heading the remainder. Once straightened up Cynthia N. hit the front and went on to score nicely by a length from Cybele, with Newbury a neck away, third, and Respirator and Miss Mercia right up. Then came Winsome Boy, Arch Queen, Welkne, King Willonyx, Star Comet, Taurimu, Liaison, Highflown, Diamond Queen and Balnagar. Prodice Scores Well

Thirteen went out for the Victoria Handicap, the bracket, Raasay and Gesto £3,085 being the elect of backers, fair support being accorded White Wings £1,470, Mithra £1,109 and Lucy Rose £1,009. At the start White Wings got chopped out, and Gold Money was slow away. English Measure began best from Gesto, Te Atiawa, Raasay, Prodice, Mithra, Perception, Orewa, Gold Money, Mon Star and Lucy Rose. Te Atiawa took charge crossing the top, and into the straight was just ahead of Prodice, with Raasay and Perception next, followed by Gesto, Mithra, Orewa and Gold Money, the last two being off the course. At the bottom of the straight Te Atiawa compounded, leaving Prodice clear, and stalling off Gesto and Raasay won by a neck, a similar distance pr 'rating second and third. Perception was a good fourth, being followed by Lucy Rose, Gold Money, Te At 5 :a, Mithra, Orewa, White Wings and .. astify, with English Measure last. The winner paid a double figure dividend. Lady Cintra’s Hurdles

Potoanui £2,389, ’ Ripon Abbey £1,597, Lady Spalpeen £1,557, Uralla £1,115, and Lady Cintra £845 carried most money in the Trial Hurdles. At the first fence Wenday and Nola made faulty jumps, the latter being pulled up, as was also Luxurious three fences further on. Passing the stands Ripon Abbey was out five lengths ahead of Prince, Papa, Uralla, Lady Cintra, Memsahib, Marita, Scot Free, Luxurious, Potoanui and Lady Spalpeen, with Ardnalea and Wenday the last pair. Through the cutting Lady Cintra and Uralla had a slight call over Ripon Abbey. Marita, Lady Spalpeen and Potoanui, but into the straight Lady Cintra and Ripon Abbey were together, with Lady Spalpeen close up, and gaps back to Potoanui, Memsahib and Uralla. There was a fine race home, Lady Cintra winning by three parts-of a length from Ripon Abbey and Lady Spalpeen, with heads between this pair. Potoanui was ten lengths back in fourth place, Uralla still further back, and Memsahib, Wenday, Marita and Scot Free were next past the post. Prince Papa fell at the second to last hurdle.

A. Gilmer, rider of Prince Papa, sustained abrasions, and W. Rowe, Nola Night’s jockey, received contusions. Mask Scores Again

The Autumn Handicap was productive of a fine contest in a falsely run race, which no doubt suited Mask better than most. Star Stranger £2.760 was a slightly better favourite than Mandane £2,626, with fair support forthcoming for Papatu £1,623, Great Charter £1,541 and Mask £1,172. Mandane, Papatu and Town Bank led on to the course proper, and passing the stands Mandane and Town Bank were together in front of P.V'tttu, Mask, Star Stranger, Micrometer, Great Charter, Transformer and Princess Ronnie, the pace being slow, the first three furlongs taking 40. At the six furlongs Micrometer, Town Bank. Papatu and Mandane had little between them (the time being 1.21), being followed by Mask, Star Stranger, Transformer and Great Charter, with Princess Ronnie still last. Mandane and Micrometer were first to turn for home, with Transformer and Town Bank right up, and Papatu, Mask, Desert Glow and Star Stranger next. After Town Bank had settled Mandane, Mask was brought along, and finishing well beat Town Bank by half a length, while Princess Ronnie got up third, a head away, just in front of Mandane. Star Stranger was next, and then came Papatu, Great Charter, Micrometer and Transformer, with Desert Glow last. Mask was at a good price. Wiltshire’s Second Win

Wedding March £2,312 and Wiltshire £1,455 were the favourites in the Autumn Steeplechase. Wiltshire was

again the pacemaker, and in fact was never headed from start to finish. Over the water jump he was attended by Glendowie, Wedding March, Glenotus, Revel, Garzon and Prince Rufus. Coming off the hill the first time Wiltshire opened up a big gap, but Wedding March was within eight lengths of him at the stand double, with Prince Rufus and Revel handy, and Garzon, Glenotus and Glendowie at intervals. At the first fence on the hill the next time Wiltshire led by ten lengths from Revel (Wedding March having fallen at the fence at the five furlongs), with Glenotus. Prince Rufus and Garzon another fifteen lengths away. This was the order at the finish, Wiltshire scoring comfortably by ten lengths, with Revel hanging on to get second a head in front of Glenotus. Garzon, Prince Rufus and Glendowie were in that order at long intervals. Satrap All The Way

AIL four started in the St. Leger, Satrap £3,533 and Damaris £1,826 being best backed. The favourite went to tho front at the end of a furlong, and passing the stands was two and a-half lengths ahead of Laughing Prince, with Damaris and In the Shade together, close up. There was little change until five furlongs, where Damaris ran up to Laughing Prince, but into the straight Satrap led Laughing Prince by three lengths, with Damaris and In the Shade handy. Satrap went on to win easily by four lengths from In the Shade, with Damaris three parts of a length back, and Laughing Prince six lengths away, fourth. They ran the first half-mile in 52 3-5, mile in 1.45, and mile and a-quarter in 2.10, the mile and threequarters taking 3.0 4-5. Aussie Leads Them Home

All started in the sprint event, the Huia Handicap, in which the prime fancies were Nancy Lee £2,321, Money Order £2,301 and Aussie £1,674, with fair support for Paganelli £1,489 and Joy King £1,479. A fine start saw Kingfield, Nancy Lee and Melissa get away smartest, closely followed by Joy King, Aussie, Subdivision, Aston, Royal Tea and Money Ordei\ Passing the half-mile Kingfield, Melissa and Nancy Le© w r ere still in line. Subdivision, Joy King, Aussie, Aston and Money Order being their nearest attendants. Into the home stretch Nancy Lee was on the outside of Kingfield and Melissa, the latter carrying her out, and next in order were Subdivision, Aussie, Joy King and Aston, the last named going out wide. A furlong from home Ivingfield, Nancy Lee, Joy King and Aussie were in a line, and there was some jostling, out of which Aussie came off best and he won by three parts of a length from Joy King, with Nancy Lee half a length back, and Kingfield right up. High Finance was fifth, and then came King Emerald, Melissa, Tinokoa, Paganelli, Royal Tea, Money Order, Aston and Subdivision. Final To Flying Juliet Best backed in the concluding event, the Islington Handicap, were Thaw £2,285, the Le Choucas-Ti Tree bracket £2,136, Valkon £1,750, and King Merv £.1,733. Ballymoy 11., Master Doon. Day Guard, Thaw, Flying Juliet, Siaosi and Branson were most prominent soon after the start, but when they had settled down Day Guard was clear of Thaw, Ballymoy 11., Flying Juliet, Eh Timi, King Merv, Master Doon, Branson, Le Choucas, Ti Tree, Siaosi, Auramavis, Queen Arch Valkon, with New Moon last. Day Guard led into the straight from Flving Juliet, Thaw, Ballymoy 11., Siaosi King Merv, Ti Tree, Le Choucas and valkon. Once they were straightened up Flying Juliet hit the front, and she managed to keep her position to beat Valkon by a head, with Day Guard three parts of a length back, third. Fourth was King Merv, and the next to finish were Le Choucas, Siaosi, Ti Tree, Branson, Thaw, Queen Arch and Ballymoy 11. Concluding results: AUTUMN STEEPLECHASE Of £500; 3 miles 2 WI LTSH IR E (T.
