NO MORE THAN 1.0. U.
THEFT WITH A DIFFERENCE PLEA THAT FAILED “Just a momentary loan—no more than putting an 1.0. U. in a cash box,” was how Alfred James Massey, aged 61, explained the theft with which he was charged at the Police Court to-day. H E pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing a tennis racquet and balls, valued at £3 15s. Chief-Detective Hammond said that, accused had been doing casual work at a private house, and then stole the goods. “That’s not quite correct,” said accused. “I had worked at the place once, and I knew where the racquet was stored.” “I was ‘stunned,’ and, needing money to pay rent, I took a loan of the racquet and pawned it. I had no intention of stealing it, and did no more than put an 1.0.TT. in a cash box.” “Fourteen days’ imprisonment,” said the magistrate. “Ah,” said accused in gratified tones, as he left the dock, “that’s better than some sentences I've had.”
