reopening institute THEIR EXCELLENCIES TO ATTEND To-morrow evening their Excellencies Sir Charles Fergusson and the Lady Alice Fergusson will be present at the re-opening of the Seamen’s Institute, Emily Place. Archbishop Averill, the Primate of New Zealand, will preside. The annual report of the Missions to Seamen "'ill be presented and a committee of business men will be elected. A welcome will be extended to the chaplain, the Rev. H. K. Vickery, who has recently been appointed to take charge the mission in Auckland. The annual report states that the prevailing unemployment affected seafaring men probably as much as any other class of people, and the use- of *ho mission rooms and the comfort hospitality to be found there were so-greatly appreciated that the attendance for the year exceeded 20,000. A nominal charge of one penny was made for cups of tea or coffee and some food, but it was never enforced the men had absolutely no money. .Ur. ‘NVoodhouse was appointed actingsuperintendent in place of Captain Harvey, whose engagement has terminated. As the mortgage of L 4,500 on the mission property falls due in March, it is hoped to raise a new mortgage and reduce the indebtedness by L 500.
