Markets and Money
IN THE MARKET PLACE POST-HOLIDAY QUIET DEARER BANANAS A quiet tone was registered in the City Markets this morning. To a certain extent it was a post-holiday reaction. The market is still glutted with tomatoes, and the values for this fruit are well below a figure which would give a reasonable return on production costs. Compared with last week’s opening rates, values for bananas have firmed appreciably. A fresh shipment due on the Tofua on Monday next should see easier values. The demand for apples is not strong at the moment, and only the choicest varieties meet with anything like a free sale. The market for field and garden produce is rather erratic, and is regulated largely by consignments from the Wellington province. Cauliflowers at the moment are offering in larger quantities than cabbages. Heavy supplies of pumpkins and kumeras are coming forward. The potato market has a decidedly easier tone and local tubers are practically unsaleable. The egg market is stationary, and registering little life.
