FEILDING’S FINAL
BIG RACE TO KILMISS BENZORA SPRINT WINNER (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Monday. The concluding day of the Feilding autumn meeting was held to-day in dull but fine weather, and in the presence of a good crowd. The course was holding after heavy rain the previous day. The totalisator handled £30,738, making a decrease of £5,520 on the meeting. The Hurdlers Panorama was preferred to Olympic and the first day’s winner, Airtight, in the Hurdles. Alaric, a newcomer, made the pace with Airtight right to the straight entrance, with. Olympic coming forward crossing the top, to be at the leaders’ quarters at the final fence, Matu and Panorama also being favourably placed. Airtight struck the fence heavily to unship his rider, and Alaric weakening, Olympic and Matu fought out the finish, Matu winning toy toalf a length, with Panorama a length and a-half back. Alaric was fourth. The Raider a Winner Billikins was favourite for the Rewa Hack, and running an improved race, was unlucky to be beaten by a newcomer in The Raider. Helotis was smartest to begin, but the lead was disputed by Billikins, The Raider and Eka, with "White Ringlet next. When heads were straightened Billikins went to the front, but The Raider finished I the stronger and won by a length, with War Wings, who finished fast, third a length and a-half back. Le Champ, who was last to move, was fourth. Surprise by Kilmiss Joy Bird was a £320 better favourite than Duke Abbey for the Easter Handicap, with Vivo in fair demand. Duke Abbey and Vivo contested the leadership over the early portion, with Joy Bird, Poitonu and Cohesion all ahead of Kilmiss. Paitonu assumed command four furlongs from home, but crossing the top Kilmiss ran up to the leaders, and with Duke Abbey weakening, was in behind Paitonu at the straight, where Vivo lodged a challenge. Paitonu looked a winner, but stopped over the last 50 yards, and Kilmiss and Vivo beat him home, Kilmiss winning by three-quarters of a length, with Paitonu a similar distance back. Othon finished from well back in fourth place, and Cohesion and Bright Day were next. Joy Bird was last.
Holus Bolus Calluna, a winner on the opening day, was elected a firm favourite in the Awa,huri Hack Handicap, Aropeta and Royal Elm also being in demand. From a walk-up start Valuator was smartest to begin from Green Acre and Holus Bolus, but approaching the turn Holus Bolus ran to the front from Green Acre, Valuator and Royal Elm, with Aropeta, Maui and Jen in attendance. Holus Bolus landed first into the straight, with Royal Elm commencing his run, but the leader was
never troubled to win by four lengths, with Green Acre (who suffered interference at the turn) in third place two lengths behind Royal Elm. Calluna was a poor fourth, with Valuator, Aropeta and Jen in a line. Benzora Improves The defection of Halgina left a bare two-dividend field in the Denbigh Handicap, in which Kiosk was a firm favourite, with good support for Benzora and Bonogne. The field left the barrier in line, Jeannette being first to show out from Vast Acre, with Dobbin and Kiosk in close attendance. Approaching the turn, Vast Acre took the lead, but the field was again well bunched at the straight, Benzora having moved up to the leaders, while Kiosk had come round on the outside. Bonogne was first to straighten up. with Benzora and Kiosk in hot pursuit. Benzora gradually overtook the leader, to win by half a length, with Kiosk beaten into third place a length behind Bonogne. Vast Acre was fourth, with Dobbin next. Well-named Winner Gold Bag and Royal Lover carried the major portion of the investments in the Waiata Stakes, with fair support for Fermanagh and Potency. Along the back Royal Lover joined the favourite crossing the top, with Fermanagh improving her position. Gold Bag landed first into the straight from Fermanagh and Royal Lover, the other runners being spread across the course. Gold Bag was never troubled to win comfortably by three lengths, with Royal Lover half a length behind Fermanagh. Service and Grattan were next.
Limosa’s Hack Cup Limosa was a good favourite for the Oroua Hack Cup, with fair demand for Discourse and Vigilance. The race for positions going away from home saw Flying Shot and Royal Acre showing way to Kahu Ariki, Vigilance, Hypnotic and Always. Five f u r ~ longs from home Kahu Ariki, Flying Shot and Royal Acre were together, with Vigilance, Royal Elm and Hypnotic attending them. Crossing the top Limosa commenced ot run round her field, Kahu Ariki being the first to straighten out for home, with Royal Elm, Flying Shot, Vigilance and Lady Cynthia at the leaders’ heels. Halfway home Royal Elm promised to be the winner, but Limosa and Red Fuchsia gathered him up, Limosa winning by a length from Red Fuchsia, with Royal Elm a length and a-half back. Lady Cynthia was fourth, with Royal Acre and Vigilance next. It was a brilliant performance on the part of the winner. Four in a Line The Makino Handicap was productive of the best finish of the meeting, four horses crossing the line together, and the judge was unable to separate second and third. Bonogne was actually the first to move, but Partaga and Wanderlust rushed to the front from Manly, Whenuanui and Paul Lucerne. Crossing the top Bonogne and Peneus ran up to the leaders, but landed in the straight Bonogne and Partaga momentarily drew out. Over the last 20 yards Manly and Peneus came with a rush. Manly getting up to win by a head from Partaga and Bonogne, with Peneus another head away. Concluding results: WAIT A STAKES 6 furlongs. 1— GOLDBAG (T. WANGANUI WINNERS With four winners and a third, the Wanganui owner-breeder, Mr. G. M. Currie, easily topped the list of winning owners with £2,900. W. Rayner and B f H. Morris, trainer and rider respectively of this string, headed the winning trainers’ and jockeys’ list also. Another Wanganui owner, Mr. W. S. Glenn, M.P., captured £1,400 with In The Shade, who won the Easter Handicap, and was second in the St. Leger.
