TARIFA GOVERNOR’S OATH

Telegrams have been received by the Lord Mayor, Sir Charles Batho, from the Chief Magistrate and the Military Governor of Tarifa, testifying to the genuineness of Miss Mercedes Gleitze’s swim across the Straits of Gibraltar. The statement of the Military Governor of Tarifa says: "Before God and on my honour Miss Gleitze swam from the lighthouse at Tarifa and landed at Punta Leone.” Miss Gleitze says: “None but a malicious person can question my swim. I was accompanied by ttv o fishing smacks and rowing Boats. The crew of the latter fed me. They also played a gramophone and sang. Apparently Miss Gleitze swam 24 miles, although the direct distance between the two points named is nine j .miles.—A. and N.Z. .
