Bishop Silent on Canon’s Suspension
WAIKATO DISSENSION
ALLEGATIONS OF DISLOYALTY
HAMILTON'. Tcwd av Asked if it was true that Canon Harvie had been suspended the Bishop replied: "The statement published this morning is not cor. rect. That is all I say.”
gUT that all is not well in Anglican Church circles at Hamilton—fo. pite recent official statements jfc»the discontent is only confined to Claudelands district —is shown by ftCthe reported suspension of Canos Harvie by Bishop Cherrington, from the . offices of Canon of St. Peter* Cathedral, Hamilton, and diocesan chaplain. The grounds for the suspension mv alleged disloyalty. Mr. Harvie took a certain line of action to which the Bishop objected, and from which Mr. Harris felt lie could not conscientiously wfci. draw. Permission to officiate in tb. diocese was then cancelled by A* Bishop.
This suspension means that hr, Harvie is no longer a canon, and he also loses his seat on the Genenl Synod and the Diocesan Synod. Ho will still be diocesan secretary, haring been appointed to that position by the Standing Committee. Presumably he will still remain editor of the "Anglican Magazine.” Mr. Harvie acted as vicar at St. Aidan’s, Remuera, during the Ret. Fowler’s absence about 13 years age, and prior to coming to Hamilton to take up diocesan appointments hew he was vicar of St. Mary’s, New Plymouth, for 10 years. Canon Harvie, when approached for a statement, refused to say anything.
