REAR-ADMIRALS AND OTHERS
Sir, — Your leader bearing on the Gilbertian situation arising from the courts-mar-tial of Captain Dewar and Commander Daniel of the Mediterranean Fleet expresses precisely the sentiments of the average layman. From present indications, the only tribunal Rear-Ad-miral Collard will have to face is the bar of public opinion, and from your cabled reports the verdict from this source, which is not bound by the letter of King’s Regulations, appears to be unanimous. Incidents like these force one to the opinion that the British Navy is not what we should like to imagine it. Let us hope an international understanding will soon be arrived at which will enable us to abolish big navies and -rear-admirals -whose forte lies in criticising ship’s music, specks on the deck and tarnish on the brasswork. CHAS. BAILEY.
