DEATH PACT FAILS
“SURPRISED TO AWAKE - ’
A suicide pact in which an ex-police-man of Bradford, John William Astbury, 31, and a Sheffield nurse, Winifred Fielding, 27, were involved, was mentioned at Bradford, England, when both pleaded guilty to charges of attempted suicide. The police said that both were found ill in a Bradford hotel. The man said they had taken morphia, and the woman had also taken a large dose of aspirin. Later Astbury said: “We made arrangements to end it,” adding that the woman had some money, and after taking some of it they had sent the balance to her mother. They took the morphia at night, and were surprised when they awoke next morning. Fielding’s relatives undertook to take care of her, and she was discharged. Astbury was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
