GOOD SPORT AT FEILDING
PARTAGAS HIGH-WEIGHT CONSISTENT ARROW LAD (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Saturday. Fine but boisterous conditions prevailed for the opening day of the Feilding Jockey Club’s autumn fixture j on Saturday. The principal honours went to Vivo, who led practically throughout, Joy Bird, who did not have the best of passages, being second and Perle de Leon third. The defeat of Benzora by Arrow Lad and Vast Acre in the open sprint lost C. Jack- ■ son, the Hawera mentor, the winning , double. He added to his successes with , Partaga in the High-weight. The ! totalisator returns showed a decrease I of £1,295, largely attributable to the indifferent innings of the favourites, j Airtight’s Hurdles Modern was the sole defection in the Hurdles, in which Kilburn £S4S was favourite, with good money for Panorama £532. Matu £5Ol. and Airtight £465. Airtight led throughout from Olympic and Chrissarto, but half a mile from heme Panorama moved up and was in behind the leader at the straight entrance. Airtight landed first over the final fence and held off Panorama to win by a neck. Olympia was six lengths back, just ahead of Chrissarto and Matu. The favourite never I threatened danger. Fee Simple Again A good field of 13 runners went to the post in the Ongo Hack Handicap. Fee Simple was elected favourite. Helotis was smartest to begin from Eka, Fee Simple and Billikins, and they ran in that order right to the straight entrance, where Fee Simple moved up to Helotis, and in a good race down the straight the Awapuni representative added yet another victory, winning nicely by a neck from Helotis. Billikins was five lengths back and Eka fourth, being followed by Lethal. Duke Abbey Fails
Luke Abbey was favourite from Joy Bird in the Manchester Handicap, Orazone and Cohesion both being preferred to 1 the Rangitikei Cup winner. Vivo. Duke Abbey, Joy Bird and Cohesion were the early leaders, but going out of the straight Vivo took charge to lead right to the straight entrance, where
Duke Abbey was finished with. Joy Bird lodged a challenge, and a good finish saw Vivo and Joy Bird fight it out, Vivo holding on long enough to win by three parts of a length. Perle de Leon came from well back in third berth six lengths away, and Manly was fourth, very closely attended by Orazone. Cohesion and Kilmiss. First For Egeria Egeria was a firm favourite in the Maiden Stakes. The favourite did not secure the best of the start. Gold Bag. Gold Cure, Valuator. Fermanagh and Mark Mint were the early leaders from Egeria. At the four furlongs post the favourite made up her ground quickly, and was on terms with Valuator, with Gold Cure, Gold Bag and Mark Mint bunched at the straight. In the run home Valuator weakened, but Mark Mint, coming with a strong burst of speed, just failed to overhaul the favourite, who got the verdict by half a head. Valuator was half a length back. Gold Bag fourth. A Boil Over Holus Bolus was preferred to Vigilance and Kahu Ariki in the Taonui Hack. Calluna was fractious at the post and was transferred to the outside position. Maui, Vigilance and Holus Bolus gained the advantage at the barrier rise, Holus Bolus and Maui being joined by Aropeta at the half mile, with Calluna alongside Vigilance in behind the leaders. Crossing the top Maui, Holus Bolus and Aropeta were in line, but the favourite dropped back suddenly, leaving Maui and Aropeta to land first into the straight from Calluna. who came on the outside to smother the leaders and go on to win comfortably from Royal Elm, another little fancied candidate, by three lengths. Vigilance was half a length back, and then came Aropeta and Bisox right up.
Arrow Lad Wins Well A bare two-dividend field contested the Mangaone Handicap, Benzora being a warm order, with Arrow Lad and Silver Mine preferred to Vast Acre.
Dobbin, from the inside position, was first out, but before half a furlong had been traversed Vast Acre had assumed command, and she led across the top from Dobbin, Silver Mine, Arrow Lad and Benzora. The field closed at the straight entrance, and with heads ; straightened out Arrow Lad ran up to Vast Acre to lead the Acre mare home : by a clear length. Benzora was a length and a-half back, with Bonogne • and Silver Mine in line with the favourite. Dobbin stopped badly and was last to finish. Hypnotic’s Surprise Kawhakina was preferred to Gasnapper and Always in the Onepuhi Handicap. Lady Cynthia showed the way to Lieutenant Bill, Hypnotic, Kawhakina and Always as they went out of the straight, but going' down the back Lieutenant Bill took charge and I led Hypnotic, Always, Lady Cynthia and Kawhakina to the home turn. In the run to the judge’s box Hypnotic and Kawhakina fought out the issue, the former prevailing by half a length! with Lady Cynthia a length and a half back. Next were Sovena and Gasnapper. Partaga’s Good Win - In the Halcombe High-weight at the j half-mine post the order was Partaga,
Kilperon, Flying Shot and Paul Lucerne. with the favourite last, j Whenuanui made up his leeway crossing the top. and was with the leaders at the straight, where Flying Shot carried him wide.
