In the Shade’s Extraordinary Finish in the Easter Handicap

THREE WINNERS FROM WANGANUI

t~iL *7 IN attendance of 23,000, with a totalisator turnover of ' A <£86,756£ for the eight races, against ,£81,997! on the \ opening day last autumn meeting, when there were seven events, marked the first day of the Auckland R.C. fixture at Ellerslie on Saturday.

HHHE weather was beautifully fine, J and the course in splendid order. The outstanding features of the day’s racing were the three wins registered by Mr. G. M. Currie’s horses, and the great finishing effort of In the Shade in the Easter Handicap, the three-year-old paying a long price. The totalisator increase of £4,759 was satisfactory. Keen sport was witnessed throughout. Episode won the G.N. Champagne Stakes in most convincing style, and to the Limond filly must be given the honours, as the best two-year-old. The G.N. Oaks went to Damaris, so that Mr. Cdrrie captured both classics. I-Ie will have a chance of taking the three classics, for Damaris is to represent the Wanganui owner-breeder in the St. Leger this afternoon. Mask ran one of his best races when he landed the President's Handicap. The final event saw a mild surprise sprung by Ohinemuri, who stayed out the mile well. She :is a full-sister to the well performed Te Monanui. The jumping events provided most interesting spectacles, the steeplechase in particular being a fine contest. It will be a long time before another performance such as In -he Shade’s is witnessed in an A.R.C. Easter Handicap. A bad last half a mile from home he was in an appar- ■ ently hopeless position, but he flew past everything in the last two furlongs, to beat Awarere by half a length. It was a genuine surprise, but a phenomenal effort. Notes on the racing and details of concluding results follow. Mask’s Good Finish Satrap £3,198 was backed as if the

Shade flashed up, and going at a great rate collarded Awarere and beat him by half a length. Great Charter was half a length away third, and Nancy Lee close up fourth. Then in line were Joy King. Valkon and Bright Glow, and after them Lysander, Flying Juliet, Paganelli. and Ballymoy 11.. with Laughing Prince, Siaosi and Day Guard the last three. The winner paid the best part of half a century. Episode Beats Prince Humphrey

Nine came out for the G.N. Champagne Stakes, and in a good pool Raasay £3,388, Episode £2,527, Prince Humphrey £1,634, Staghunter £1,464 and Gold Money £1,115, carried the money. At the start Gold Money dwelt slightly, Episode, on the rails, moving off quickly from Freehold and Avon Court, with Raasay, Prince Humphrey, Mithra, Staghunter, Gold Money and Prodice. At the half-mile Episode led Freehold by half a length, with Mithra, Avon Court and Raasay close up and Prince Humphrey, Staghunter and Prodice in that order, the last-named bqing tailed off. Episode still retained her half-length advantage at the home turn over Freehold, with Gold Money, Raasay and Prince Humphrey handy, and Mithra, Avon Court and Staghunter next. Episode appeared to interfere with Prince Humphrey at the distance, and she beat him by nearly two lengths. Freehold was three parts of a length away third, and Mithra half a length away fourth. Two lengths away was Raasay, and then came Prodice, Avon Court and Staghunter, with Gold Money easing up several lengths away.

race for the President’s Handicap was i all over, and outside, of the three-year- -j old those best supported were Mandane ; £1,424, Princess Ronnie £1,171, Mask , £824 and Corinax £778. An even start ‘ saw Papatu and Le Choucas lead out of the straight from Mask, Hipo, Town Bank, Queen Arch, Transformer, Ballachulish and Corinax, Mandane tailing the field. Passing the six furlongs Corinax took up the running from Papatu, Le Choucas, Queen Arch, Mask, Town Banlj, Hipo, Transformer, Satrap, Mandane, Desert Glow and Princess I. Ronnie, with Ballachulish last. Cross- * ing the top the favourite made a forward move, and into the home stretch 1 the order was Corinax, Papatu, Queen t Arch, Satrap, Le Choucas, Mask, Town " Bank, Mandane and Desert Glow. Once * straightened up the favourite looked to have a chance, but he failed to go on with it. Then Mask joined issue with the leaders, and in a tight finish won by half a length from Papatu, with Town Bank a neck away, third, a head in front of Mandane. Next came Hipo, Satrap, Queen Arch, Corinax, Princess Ronnie, Desert Glow, Le Choucas and Ballachulish, with Transformer the whipper-in. Both Mandane and Satrap were unlucky. Easy for Damaris The* Oaks was the .. best of good things for Damaris, who Was favourite at £2,545, but at a fair price. Best backed of the other runners were Doree £1,861 and Ti Tree £1,484. with Auriculus £665 the outsider. Ti Tree went out to set a solid pace, leading past the post by five lengths from Auriculus and Miss Mercia, with Damaris, Doree and Wild'. Pigeon all handy. Down the back the leader be- ■, gan to slacken up, the favourite lying second here, with Miss Mercia, Auriculus, Doree and Wild Pigeon within striking distance. Approaching the half-mile Damaris took the lead and S carried them along at a good bat, and [* was joined by Auriculus, with Ti Tree, £ Wild Pigeon and Doree just behind. At the furlong post Damaris went away to win by four lengths from Auriculus, with Ti Tree only a head away. Wild Pigeon was another four lengths back, Doree five lengths off. and Miss Mercia last. 1 The sectional times were: Three 2 furlongs 40, half-mile 52 2-5, live fur--3 longs 1.7 3-5, six furlongs 1,20 3-5, mile 1.47, and the mile and a-half d 2.36 3-5. d y Wedding March’s Hurdles l * Ten started in the Brighton Hurdles, Wedding March £2,192 and Archibald £1,711 disputing favouritism, while Lady Spalpeen £1,235, Revel ■'» £946 and Potoanui £874 also had J friends. Kawa, Archibald, Potoanui, Revel, Lady Cintra and Mia Bella, with Karamu last, was the order at the end of the first half-mile, but passing the - stands Potoanui was four lengths clear of Archibald, uady Spalpeen, Kawa, Lady Cintra, Revel, King Amans, and Karamu, with WeddingMarch and Mia Bella together last. At the six furlongs fence Archibald was almost down with a* faulty jump, and y that put him out of the contest. Potoa- ® nui was still in charge at this stage, • from Lady Spalpeen. Revel, Archibald,

Easy for Wiltshire Ten out of the 17 acceptors contested the Mangere Steeplechase, Prince Rufus being made favourite with £1,619, while there was also good support for Wiltshire £1,590, Memsahib £1,484 and Uralla £1,246. On the hill the first time Mashoor was leading Memsahib, Clockwork, Prince Rufus, Wiltshire, Uralla, Lucilius, Simplicitas, Sea Comet and Garzon. Over the stand double Wiltshire had command from Mashoor, Memsahib, Prince Rufus, Uralla, Sea Comet, Lucilius and Simplicitas, with Clockwork and Garzon the last pair. Wiltshire had an advantage of half a dozen lengths at the first fence on the hill the last time, with Prince Rufus and Uralla together, and Sea Comet, Mem- ; sahib and Simplicitas next. Wiltshire retained his advantage at the final obstacle and went on to score by five lengths from Uralla, who was ten lengths ahead of Prince Rufus. Sea Comet was a good fourth, and then at intervals finished Simplicitas, Garzon, Memsahib, Lucilius, Clockwork and Mashoor. White Wings Finishes Well A .big field of 17 lined up for the Onslow Stakes, Perception £2,845 and Gesto £2,043 monopolising the betting market, White Wings £1,027 beingfat a fine price. Winnington got the best of the. dispatch, being followed out of the tapes by White Wings. Te Atiawa, Gesto, Jolly Money, Mon Star, Justify, Orewa and Perception. Bulolo was in charge passing the half-mile, next being Te Atiawa, Lucy Rose, White Wings, Justify, Winnington. Gesto, Perception and Orewa. Bulolo led Lucy Rose, Te Atiawa, White Wings, Jolly Money, Gesto and Perception into the straight, where White Wings came through to win by a length from Lucy Rose, with Gesto three parts of a length away third. Te Atiawa was fourth, and then . came Perception: Jolly Money, Bulolo’. Justify, O’rewa. Winnington, Pure Gold, Valquette and Te Money. Ohinemuri Clears Out The final event of the day, the Eden Handicap, attracted 21 runners. Micrometer £1,612, Cynthia N. £1,209, Liaison £1,203, the Dimmer-Welcome Home bracket £1,197> and Winsome Boy £ 1.06 S being the best supported. Soon after the start Welcome Home, Dimmer, Ohinemuri, Cynthia N., Liaison, Highfiown, Winsome Boy, Master Clements, King Willonvx and Modest Boy were in that order, the field quickly stringing out. At the halfmile Ohinemuri went to the front from Cvnthia N., Dimmer, Welcome Horne, Winsome Boy, King Willonyx, Liaison and Highfiown. Then Ohinemuri left her opponents, showing the way into the straight eight lengths in front of Cynthia N., with Dimmer, Winsome Boy,. Welcome Home and Liaison following. It wasn’t a race up the stretch, Ohinemuri going on to win easily by ten lengths. Winsome Boy beat Cynthia N. for the other dividend by a neck; and Micrometer, who \vas unlucky, was fourth. Next were Dimmer, Cybele. Liaison. Restaurant, Arch Queen and King Willonyx.

Lady Cintra. Kawa, King Amans, Wedding March and Mia Bella. Cross- „ ing the top Potoanui and Lady -Spalpeen were well clear, but they bunched coming to the straight, this pair leading Revel, Wedding March, Kawa, King Amans, Archibald and Lady Cintra. A faulty jump at the last hurdle affected Potoanui’s chance, for Wedding March and Revel both caught him, the former winning by a length from Revel, with Potoanui a neck away. Lady Spalpeen, who made a faulty jump two hurdles from home, was fourth, and there was a gap back to Kawa, with Karamu, Lady Cintra. King Amans, Mia Bella and Archibald following. In the Shade’s Big Price Scratchings reduced the Easter Handicap field to 14, Star Stranger, Money Order, Doree, Le Choucas, True Blood, , Tinokoa and Oration being -withdrawn on the course. The result was a big surprise, an outsider in In the Shade prevailing. Joy King £3,017 was favourite, and at the head of the other quotations were Bright Glow £2,809. Awarere £1.825, Great Charter £1,238, and Laughing Prince £1.073, In the Shade carrying £253. Ballymoy 11.. Laughing Prince. Great Charter, Bright Glow, Lysander. Day Guard, Flying Juliet. Joy King and Siaosi, with Valkon last. Going over the hill Ballymoy 11. and Awarere were still making play in the front from Paganelli and Bright Glow, with Lysander also well up and Great Charter. Day Guard and Valkon handy, with Joy King and Flying Juliet second to last and In the Shade another three lengths behind them. Awarere was three parts of a length in front of Ballymoy 11. into the home stretch, from Bright Glow, with Valkon next and Lysander, Paganelli and Nancy Lee close up. Awarere was clear at the furlong post, with about half a >n dozen horses in line a length away. A hundred yards with the post In the
