NORTHUMBERLAND ROCK
SEARCH BY WARSHIPS NO TRACE FOUND
The following official report by the commodore commanding the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, relative to the search for “Northumberhtf’iJ* Rock,” north of Gisborne, has been published by the Marine Department: “The search for the rock, presumed to have been struck by the Northumberland in lat. 38deg. 41min. 30secs. S., long.. 178 deg. 14min. 30secs. E., was carried out by the Laburnum, Veronica and Wakakura on February 13, 14 and 15, and no obstruction was found. An area of three miles long by two miles wide was thoroughly swept to a depth of 10 fathoms by the Wakakura, under the direction of Commander H. L. Morgan, who- considers the area to be clear of all obstructions to a depth of 10 fathoms. During the sweep over the patch of shallower soundings shown on chart No. 3,343, lines of soundings were run by both the C-aburnum and Veronica. The results of these sound - ings are considered to be a reliable check on the accuracy of the position of the area swept and also on the accuracy of the chart. The sweeping operations have been completed and the buoys withdrawn.”
